The world of cycling is in constant search for innovation, always in the race to improve performance and aerodynamic efficiency. In this sense, the Visma-Lease a Bike team has taken a bold step with its latest release: the Giro Aerohead II. Recently presented at Tirreno-Adriatico, this helmet promises to revolutionize the world of time trials with its innovative design and aerodynamics-focused approach.

Collaboration between Giro Cycling and Visma-Lease a Bike

The Giro Aerohead II is the result of a close collaboration between Giro Cycling and the yellow team. This model has been designed specifically for time trials, taking advantage of the experience and technical knowledge of both parties. The objective was clear: create a helmet that offered maximum aerodynamics without compromising the rider's comfort or safety.

Tests in the Wind Tunnel: Guarantee of Efficiency

One of the most notable features of the Giro Aerohead II is its efficiency aerodynamics. Before its launch, the helmet underwent rigorous wind tunnel testing to ensure optimal performance in real-world conditions. The results were satisfactory, indicating that the helmet design is “fast” and meets all the requirements necessary to compete at the highest level.

The design is inspired by the shape of the upper fin of a shark, creating a kind of bubble between the head, forearms and handlebars. This aerodynamic shape helps reduce wind resistance and improve the rider's speed, which can make a big difference in time trials where every second counts.

Challenges and Future of the Aerohead II Giro

Despite its promising debut at Tirreno-Adriatico, the Giro Aerohead II faces additional challenges before becoming a standard fixture in professional cycling. The adaptation personalized of the runners and the data collection Performance measurements are critical steps in the continuous helmet evaluation and improvement process.

It will not be the only test where Visma-Lease uses this new helmet, it will also do so in the Paris-Nice and rest of the times. Now, the team will see how this novelty works ahead of the stage race that will take place from this Monday to Sunday.

It should be noted that, although it has passed all the tests, the advantages that a helmet with these characteristics provides are still publicly unknown. On the other hand, the rest of the teams are attentive to what may benefit them on the road. For now, in the test it is located at ninth position Jonas Vingegaard.

The Aerohead II Giro and the Olympics

One of the most intriguing aspects is its potential to influence Olympic cycling events. Although it is not currently authorized for competitions such as the Paris Olympics, its introduction into the world of professional cycling could pave the way for its eventual inclusion in future events. However, UCI regulations and rigorous evaluation processes must be met before the Giro Aerohead II can be considered for official Olympic events.

In its latest statement, the UCI highlighted the ban on the “sock” integrated into the helmet. Evenpoel Specialized's TT5, a component that has been classified as non-essential under current regulations. We will have to wait and see how they decide in this case with the Visma-Lease team.
