Sections of Cobblestones

The cobblestone sectors are emblematic of the Tour of Flanders and represent a unique difficulty, demanding excellent handling and positioning technique within the peloton. Cyclists seek the perfect balance between maintaining speed and protecting their bike and body from the relentless punishment of the cobblestones.

Emblematic Uploads

  • Oude-Kwaremont: Appearing in the last 55 kilometers of the race, this 2,2 km stretch with an average gradient of 4% (and stretches reaching up to 11%) is often the scene of decisive attacks. Its length and the cobblestones make it both a physical and technical challenge.

  • Paterberg: Almost immediately after the Oude Kwaremont, the Paterberg is much shorter (360 meters) but incredibly steep, with slopes reaching up to 20%. This climb is crucial and can be decisive for the race.

  • Koppenberg: With a maximum slope of 22%, the Koppenberg is feared by many. Although he is not that close to the end, his difficulty can cause big differences and is a key point for attacks or to reduce the pack.

Strategy and Placement

Strategy plays a crucial role in the Tour of Flanders. Positions in the platoon are vital, especially when approaching key sectors. Teams work to place their leaders in optimal positions to avoid falls, jams, and to be in good position to respond or launch attacks.
